There are multiple citation formats. It is vital to know how to cite a website as per the given citation style the dissertation or article is following. Students need to confirm the citation style from their institute.
Using the wrong citation style can create problems. Any citation mistakes along the way in a website, blog, or paper can lead to plagiarism. Apart from manually searching for citation mistakes or using blog plagiarism checker, care has to be taken while citing sources.
Original content on the internet has to be cited correctly. Taking references from blogs/websites without crediting the source is plagiarism. Whatever information is copied from the internet has to be cited.

- Hence, the author’s name is followed by the publication date. After that, the publication date, the title is inserted, and the URL is the last part of the citation.
In the case of a blog post, the rules are slightly different. The date and author names and URL is cited in the same way. But the title isn’t italicized. Instead, type the blog title normally and, after the title, mention the type of blog post within third brackets. The rest of the format remains the same.
2. MLA Format:
Modern Language Association citation format is generally used for dissertations that deal with subjects like Literature, Languages, Art, and Philosophy. Parentheses are used for in-text citations in MLA format.
It is essential to know the citation rules for MLA format to know cite sources in the same. Follow the rules are given below to cite a website in MLA format:
- The website’s name is the title, and the owner of the site is the author.
- Names of authors shown on the site have to be cited. But if there are no authors, then the name of the organization is used in place of the author’s name.
- Type the author’s last name, followed by the full first name to cite author names.
- Use comma is between the first name and the last name.
- To cite websites with a maximum of three authors, invert the name of the first author and type the remaining author names in the standard order without any commas in-between the first and last names.
- Separate the names of the authors by typing ‘and.’ Place full stop after the names of the authors. When there are four or more authors, type the name of the first author and then type ‘et al.’ and give a full stop. After this, enter the site title and italicize it. Give publisher information after the title.
- The date is the next part of the citation. In the MLA format, a date-month-year format is used. Enter the date followed by the abbreviation of the month and a full stop. Mention the year after that. Place a colon sign after the year and state the URL. Underline the URL. The citation ends with a full stop.
While citing a blog post in MLA format, the only difference is in the blog title format. The succession of the parts of information of the citation remains the same. After the author’s name, enclose the blog article within double quotation marks.
Use a full stop after the closing double-quotes. Type the name of the blog after the full stop. After the blog’s name, give a period. Mention the publication date is in the above mentioned format. Insert the URL after this.
3. Harvard Style: British
Universities often use this form of citation style. It is commonly used for citing reference sources.
In this format, the date the site has accessed by the user for copying/downloading reference information has to be noted. Like other citation styles, in the Harvard referencing format, the authors’ names or names come first.
- Type the author’s surname first and insert a comma to separate the last name from the initials of the first name of the author.
- Mention multiple authors is in the citation by listing all the author names in the inverted format and separate the author names with ‘and.’ After the last author’s name, use the first brackets to mention the year of publication.
- The year in which the website was inaugurated is regarded as the publication date. Give full stop after the closing first bracket.
- Type the title of the site after the full stop and capitalize only the first letter of the first word of the website’s title. After the website’s title, use third brackets to mention the source. As the citation is for a website, type the word ‘Online’ within the third brackets. Give a full stop after the closing third bracket.
- Type the term, ‘Available at’ followed by a colon. Give the URL after the colon and underline it. Insert the first brackets. The date of accessing the website is mentioned within the first brackets. Type the word ‘Accessed’ in the bracket, followed by a colon sign. Give the date after the colon. The date succeeds, the name of the month. Mention the year after the month’s name.
To cite a blog post in Harvard format, mainly the citation method present for the website is followed. But there are some slight changes in the title portion. Begin the citation with the author’s name and end it with the date of accession. The URL precedes the date. The main difference lies in the way in which the title is typed.
Type the blog post after a full stop. After the name of the post, mention the word ‘Blog’ within third brackets. It refers to the format of the source of the post/article. After the third bracket, type the name of the blog and italicize it. The URL and the accession date follow the same format after the name of the blog.
4. Chicago Style:
It’s another format used for documentation purposes.
- To cite a blog in this style, write the author’s name usually and then give a comma. Open double quotation marks and type the title of the blog post. Place a comma after the name of the blog post and then close the double quotation marks.
- Type the name of the blog and italicize it. Type the word ‘blog’ and keep it within first brackets after the blog’s name. Give a comma and mention the name of the publisher after the name of the blog.
- Use another comma then follow a month-day-year format to mention the date of publication. Use commas after the date and after the year. Enter the URL of the blog and finish the citation with a full stop.
Almost the same format is followed to cite a webpage in this style. Mention the author’s name and enclose the webpage’s title within double quotation marks.
Type the name of the webpage and italicize it. Insert comma and type’ last modified’ after that. Mention the name of the month, day, and year.
Give comma between date and year. After mentioning the years, give a comma, and insert the URL.
The citation styles mentioned are the widely used and accepted citation styles, but apart from them, they are styles such as Vancouver and the Turabian citation styles. However, whatever citation style the writer chooses, s/he ensures that it’s error-free. Errors in cited works can result in plagiarism.
