When Educators Plagiarize

Setting a good example for students is one of the most important values that teachers, professors, and administrators take pride in. Making them think and learn is their job. Sometimes the lines of what is able to used get blurred. Here are some places to be careful you use your own words.

School Newsletters and Emails

These are the updates the parents, teachers, and sometimes students read. Including the information they need to know for the upcoming weeks is helpful, just be sure you are not copying from another school district. Following an example is always good to base work of, but your own style will be appreciated by those who know you and of course trust you.

Speeches

Giving a speech to the incoming freshman class, a group of official from the county, or even the PTA is something that should be thought through and written with an authentic voice. Teachers, parents, and many others from within the school and district always hold educators and administrators under a microscope, so these are the times to be extra diligent about using your own words..

Test questions

This is a subject that sometimes falls into a grey area. There are many workbooks that are created with the intent that the questions will be used for tests. It’s always best to check the policy of your school or university. When in university of post-doc, many professors are responsible for creating their own prompts even if they follow different formats.

Dissertations and writing pieces

Published articles are available for people in your field of academia and many times the public to see. In the past few years many cases of plagiarism have risen as it has become easier to plagiarize, and to detect it.
